As the cleanup process continues, the Charlottesville area is now pitching in to help out with the cause. City Councilors laid out a plan tonight to help in the Hurricane Relief efforts. They are not only thinking of the immediate future, but looking ahead toward their long-term goals.
After nine days, everyone is familiar with the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Charlottesville City Council, in conjunction with the County Board of Supervisors, and several other agencies are joining forces to provide much needed relief for the Gulf Coast residents.
"The most immediate term need is just to make sure that everybody that was displaced has a roof over their head. That is what we will be working on the coming weeks," said Vice-Mayor Kevin Lynch.
The Greater Charlottesville Katrina Relief Partnership will collect donations of both money and goods. The partnership also expects to work with stricken localities to provide a long term housing option.
"Our expectation is that the large centers will be looking to find more permanent residency for the people that they have," said Lynch.
In the end, Lynch said the goals are to provide relief by whatever means possible.
The city expects to take in six families this week, and 20 more in the near future.
