Rain has doused the area all day long and it is expected to continue into tomorrow. With the heavy rains comes the flooding as well as the road closures.
A consistent driving rain bombarded much of the area for the entire day leading to flooded roads and slick roadways. This road, Route 634 in Greene County was just one of the roads closed due to high waters. At the height of the rainfall, five roadways in Madison County and Greene County were under water.
Officials tell us that a combination of heavy rains and water coming off of the mountains have caused numerous road closures throughout many counties.
But the big question is, will this rain help? Much of Virginia has seen little rain since the end of August. Department of Forestry spokesperson Fred Turck says while every little bit helps, this will just delay the inevitable.
"We are still looking at what could be a potentially pretty significant active fire season," Turck said.
At this point in the season, the Commonwealth is significantly drier than in 2001, the benchmark of all wildfire seasons. And while Turck says the Department of Forestry can't predict the future, right now it looks dry.
"All indications are that over a long period of time, which we're talking until the middle of December, that it is going to be dry. Dryer than normal," he said.
As of Friday, all roads are open in Madison County. Greene County is reporting several road closures including Rt. 634 and Dyke Road.
