With Halloween now upon us, keeping those little ghosts and goblins out of harms way is on the minds of many across Charlottesville, especially those in uniform. The Charlottesville Police Department was out in full force keeping our entire community safe, and everything under control.

According to officer Mark Jones, the night was just like any other. He received a few more calls for incidents of vandalism, but any time the entire community hits the streets, there is always a propensity for trouble.

When most people think of Halloween night, they think of lanterns and pumpkins. But for Charlottesville Police, it means more people out on the streets.

"All the little kids running around. [We want to] make sure all of them get home safe. Of course you are going to have the mischievous folks with their eggs and their toilet paper and that type of deal," said Officer Mark Jones.

Jones grew up in Charlottesville and has been on the force since January. This is his first Halloween patrol, but he knows the evening shift and he knows what to expect.

"The evening shift is everything from your animal complaints all the way up to whatever else you can think of. Evening shift handles a lot of everything," he said.

At any time, officers have to be ready to spring into action.

Just before 9 p.m., officers got the call for a potential breaking and entering and a foot chase ensued. Officers stopped a car that fit the description in the 2000 block of JPA. After a thorough search, the car was allowed to leave. In the end, Jones said he loves the job because it keeps him on his toes.

"It's something different everyday. It's a lot of different stuff...You never get bored," he said.

Both Charlottesville Police and Albemarle County Police say they treat Halloween as if it is any other evening, no extra staff added. The officers on duty do know that anything can happen, but they say that is what they signed up for.
