New North Fire Station to Be Built

Albemarle county continues to grow, but with so many new people comes added responsibilities.

Northern Albemarle County is one of the hot-spots for development, especially around the Hollymead area, but as it grows, it's harder for fire crews and rescue squads to get places on-time, and when you're life is in danger, each minute is precious.

"It's important to respond quickly and start procedures in care before you have irreversible brain damage in some cases, such as cardiac arrest," said Chief J. Dan Eggleston of Albemarle Fire and Rescue.

Standard response time in the area is five minutes, but the first responding station is Earlysville, which takes much longer to get there.

"Currently we've got a response time [of] probably eight to nine to ten minutes," said Chief Fred Huckstep of Earlysville Volunteer Fire Company.

This is about to change. The county is making plans to add a new fire house--Station 12--to serve the Hollymead area and the north part of the county along US 29.

Just off Rt 29 and Airport Road is the proposed site for the new fire station. Officials hope it will be open July 2007.

"It'll basically cut our response time to the 29 North corridor by five to six minutes," said Huckstep.

Earlysville is one of the busiest stations. Just last year--calls increased by 20 percent.

"It's just again putting a needed resource in an area that has seen a lot of growth over the last few years," said Huckstep.

The Earlysville station itself is growing, and not just the building. The station is also doubling it's amount of volunteers, who may also serve at the new station.

Albemarle County is also going to put a new station at Pantops and Ivy.
