Albemarle County Police continue to investigate a bank robbery that occurred early this afternoon. It took place at the Patriot Bank off of Route 29 in the Albemarle Square Shopping Center.
Just after 3 p.m., a man walked into the Patriot Bank in the Albemarle Square Shopping Center and walked out with a bag full of cash.
"He presented a note to the teller, demanded money, money was given to the individual. The individual left the bank," said Lt. Greg Jenkins.
The man fled the scene on foot. None of the three tellers inside were injured in the incident. Bob Short was working in the office next door when he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.
"I glanced over and saw a man walk by from the bank area in that general direction and then walk into a blind spot in the building," he said.
Short says he is not sure if what he saw is related. Police say they are following up on every lead.
"Right now we are in the process of doing a canvas and trying to locate witnesses to the incident," Jenkins said.
The man is being described as a white male, late thirties to early forties, 5'5" to 5'8" with a slim build. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue sweatshirt, and a blue baseball cap with sunglasses. Police say they do not know if he left the shopping center on foot or in car. If you have any information, police urge you to call Crimestoppers at 434-977-4000.
