New Childhood Foundation Established

December 12, 2005

Established Monday, the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation, will specifically target children ages five and younger. The foundation will provide funding that will help communities and organizations improve early childhood programs across the Commonwealth.

"Research shows that nearly 85 percent of the core structure of a child's brain develops in the first three years of life," said Governor Warner.

For this very reason, many educators think that a foundation focusing on early childhood is a very wise investment.

"Those pre-school years are really the critical years in which the foundation for future success in school is laid, so this is the time that we really need to provide excellent high quality programs for young children," said Linda Bevilacqua of the Core Knowledge Foundation in Charlottesville.

Governor Warner is also proposing additional funding to the New Parent Tool Kit, which would arm parents with valuable information about caring for their newborn children.
