Winding roads and black ice seem to be the cause of an accident Wednesday morning that sent a man and his young daughter to the hospital.

Winding roads and black ice may be the cause of a daily ride to school turned upside down.

An accident on Markwood Road Wednesday morning sent a man and his young daughter to the hospital.

"I heard the loud screech of the brakes and the car flipped in the air, I'd say 15 feet," said Marta Tice who lives on Markwood.

The driver of the BMW was on his way to drop his daughter off at Broadus Wood Elementary School. Kim Briehl was on her way home after dropping off her kids at the same elementary school, when she noticed the overturned vehicle on the side of the road. She then realized a small child in the car and tried to keep her calm.

"I asked her about her kindergarten class, because she's in a similar class [as my son] so I talked about friends that they both know," said Briehl.

Albemarle County Police say both driver and his daughter were transported to University of Virginia hospital with non life threatening injuries.

"They were transported to University of Virginia Hospital and I just got done talking to them. They have some minor cuts and bruises, but they're fine," said Ron Kesner of the Albemarle County Police.

Accidents on this part of Markwood Road are not uncommon. Tice said this is becoming a way too familiar scene.

"This is the fifth or sixth accident that I've seen on Markwood Road. There's a curve in the road, and typically people that lose control...crash either in the ditch or in the field opposite of where we're standing," said Tice.

With possible black ice on the roads, driving along the curve of Markwood Road at regular speeds is dangerous, and the possible cause of this accident.

"[I'm] very glad they were able to pull them out and thankful that they're alive," said Tice.

Albemarle County Police are investigating the actual cause of the accident.
