So far the year of giving has not hurt holiday sales. In fact many merchants said it was incredibly busy for a Monday--this far out of the season.

"Well for a Monday we did quite incredibly," said Daniel Murphy of The Comic Game Hobby Place.

But not just Monday--Tuesday, Wednesday and the rest of the week. In fact some have seen sales double since last year.

"They've been outstanding. We've started really strongly into this year, growing about double of last year and it's actually accelerated in the last two months," said "Stampy" the owner of Stampy's Cool Stuff.

Some are surprised by the increase in sales.

"Well you can name a number of reasons why they might not be as good--higher gas prices, economy issues, what have you, but I've not seen any of that," said Stampy.

In fact shoppers say the stores are already very crowded.

"I went to Barracks Road Shopping Center on Saturday and it was an absolute zoo. It took me 30 minutes to find a parking space," said Caroline Batchelor, who was shopping for holiday gifts.

"Fashion Square was crazy and Walmart was really insane," said Carly Humphrey who was also shopping for holiday gifts.

The long lines have more shoppers turning to catalogues and the internet.

"I've discovered eBay, it's pretty intense, I've gotten some things off there, but I still need to do a little bit more," said Humphrey.

At the register, many local stores said it's been extremely busy. Some attribute it to expanding what they sell and other say they are selling more expensive items this year than in past years.
