A science camp put on by Exxon Mobil and UVa is helping 52 local middle school students get some hands on math and science experience.

The camp is two weeks long and is one of 20 happening across the nation at universities like UVa.

The point of the camps is to teach kids the science behind modern technology so that they can one day pursue high-tech jobs in the future.

"Often times students don't realize that most things, like their cell phones and their video games has something to do with math and science." says Carolyn Vallas, director of the camp at UVa.

"We want to try to connect those pieces for them and show them that theres so many exciting things, so really do well in math and science."

Friday was 'Space Day', so with help from Exxon Mobil Engineer Ricky Zhao, the students had a competition to see who could build the most durable space suit out of house hold materials.

Astronauts Bernard Harris, MD and Kathryn Thornton, PhD also helped out with the camp.
