A man is behind bars, charged with the rape and sexual battery of an 11-year-old girl from Lake Monticello. Police say this may not have been the first time this man allegedly hurt a young girl.

A 25-year-old male who knew the family was arrested early Friday morning for allegedly raping the 11-year-old. Police say the man was at the victim's house in Lake Monticello Thursday night.

"The mother interrupted the suspect while he was laying in bed with the daughter," said Tom Boisvert of Lake Monticello Police.

25-year-old Ross Edward Stainback III of Kents Store in Fluvanna County was arrested and charged with raping a juvenile.

Police arrested Stainback at the victim's house early Friday morning after the mother convinced him to return to their home.

"He called the mother to see if he could work the situation out and wanted to know if she was going to send him to jail," said Chief Boisvert.

When he came back, police charged Stainback with the rape of the 11-year-old. He has been to the victim's home on several occasions with a friend of the family.

"He is being charged at this point with forcible rape and aggravated sexual battery on an 11-year-old female, and our investigation seems to indicate that it may have happened more than once so we're going to pursue that as well and further charges I expect to be filed," said Chief Boisvert.

Other parents worry about their kids, even inside a gated community like Lake Monticello.

"I do have a young daughter and I know that there are three child molesters in the area, which upset me, but we just have to be very careful and watch out after her and never leave her alone or with strangers," said Lake Monticello resident Peggy Shanklin.

We all tell our kids to be aware of strangers, but in this instance it wasn't a stranger, but an acquaintance who allegedly raped this child. Police say it's been several years since they've seen a crime like this here.

The alleged victim was the oldest of five children living with a single mom. She was taken to the hospital, but is now home and police say she's doing fine.
