School Funding On the Agenda for City Council Meeting

July 15, 2013

The Charlottesville City Council will meet tonight to discuss funding for schools. Government budget cuts and sequestration lead to cuts in funding for the Virginia Department of Education. As a result, funding for schools in Charlottesville has been cut.

City Council budgeted $1,483,676 dollars for the schools budget, but now, due to cuts, they will be nearly $140,000 dollars short.

In order to deal with those cuts, council members will decide if they will come up with the funding or cut two teaching positions in math and reading from one of the Title I schools.

Title I is a government-funded program that gives low-performing students extra attention. There are five Title I schools in the City of Charlottesville:

Burnley-Moran Elementary
Clark Elementary
Greenbriar Elementary
Jackson Via Elementary
Johnson Elementary

City Council is also considering removing one teaching position and two teaching assistant positions in one of those Title I schools.

School officials believe that if they were to lose that money, the Title I schools would be at a larger disadvantage for preparing students for testing in reading and math.
