One man is behind bars after leading police on a chase that started in Augusta County and ended in Albemarle County. Officials say Tracy Claytor was wanted on criminal charges in Augusta County. When an officer tried to pull him over, he sped off. Officers say he lost control of his vehicle on Newton Road in Albemarle County and drove into a ditch. He ran off on foot a little before 5:00 PM Friday. Officers blocked off the area while they searched for Claytor near a home in the area.
"Officers weren't really sure if he ran into the residence or in hiding," said Sgt. Sean Hackney of the Albemarle County Police Department. "It was reported he was armed so out of abundance of caution for the community, we secured the area."
Police say they found Claytor hiding behind a nearby house. He did not know the homeowners, but neighbors recognized his car so he may be familiar with the area.
Claytor was not armed. Police transported him back to Augusta County to face charges.
Multiple law enforcement agencies have responded to a situation in western Albemarle County, descending around Newtown Road and Brooksville Road.
A pursuit that started in Augusta County ends up in Albemarle County, but officials are not confirming if it is related to the scene on Newtown Road.
