An attempted burglary last year at a Greene County bank is tied to a massive crime ring out of Baltimore.

Four people targeted the University of Virginia Credit Union on April 8, 2012. The suspects got away before deputies from the Greene County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene.

However, last week, they were among suspected felons caught during a federal sting operation in Baltimore.

Sixteen people in all were arrested on charges involving robberies, burglaries and drugs spanning five states and the District of Columbia. The incidents took place over a number of years.

"We see this as a major community impact case for the region," said Capt. Dave Roach with the Greene County Sheriff's Office. "We will stay engaged with the case to see that at least our piece of it is advanced through the federal system."

Investigators say the crime operation brought in $1 million from robberies, and $2 million from drug sales.

The case is ongoing and more charges are expected.
