A recent report released Monday shows the amount of money charged to the state by Governor Bob McDonnell’s lawyers. According to the Washington Post, a private law firm was hired to represent the Gov. and his staff.

That firm charged nearly $54,000 dollars for the first five weeks of work. $24,000 of that amount was from the governor alone. The rest of that money was for his staff’s representation.

According to the attorneys at the firm, they lowered their hourly rates for the case.

This whole investigation goes back to the governor’s former chef, Tod Schneider, who was accused of taking food from the Gov.’s mansion. Schneider, in return, spoke out about gifts the Gov. received from Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams. One of those gifts was for $15,000 dollars towards the wedding of the Gov.’s daughter.

Schneider is expected in court in October. The Gov. is supposed to speak Tuesday morning on WTOP for his monthly “Ask the Governor” segment.

Normally the Attorney General’s office represents the Gov. and other state employees in these types of cases, but Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli appointed the law firm after he realized there was a conflict of interest in the case.
