There is new information tonight in the case of the man accused of raping a University of Virginia student over 20 years ago. Forty-one-year-old William Beebe remains behind bars in a Las Vegas jail.
Beebe's bail was set at $20,000 by a Las Vegas judge, and he has yet to post that amount. Last week, Beebe was arrested for allegedly raping a UVA student at a fraternity party back in 1984. After nearly 22 years, Beebe made contact with the victim, apologizing for the incident. She later called police ,setting the judicial wheels in motion.
During his appearance today, Beebe did not waive extradition and asked a judge that he be allowed to travel to Charlottesville under his own power. The judge granted that wish, much to the dismay of the Charlottesville Police.
"Now it's a wait process. We're going to seek a governors warrant here from the governor of Virginia and that warrant will be communicated to the governor of Nevada and hopefully we'll be bringing Mr. Beebe back to face charges here in Virginia," said Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo.
The Commonwealth Attorney has already begun drafting the extradition papers and they believe it will take between 30 and 90 days to get that transfer done.
Beebe faces one count of felony rape which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
