There is already one way across the Downtown Mall, but what about for drivers going in the other direction?
The Charlottesville Planning Commission decided it is not necessary to open a through-way at this time. That means they are not recommending it to City Council.
The two streets in question were opening 4th Street or 5th Street. Many advocates were businesses that wanted more access and visibility.
"If that becomes a hindrance to business, then we lose customers, we lose tax base, we lose a lot of those things. So if our customers are saying 'we need access,' then I think that's what we need to provide," said Mary Loose Deviney who works on the Downtown Mall.
The motion passed not to recommend the opening at this time 5 to 2 with a main concern being safety.
Currently the only way to cross the Mall is at 2nd Street and then to wrap around the east side by 10th Street.
