A Charlottesville Police officer has been arrested and charged with assault and battery. Charlottesville Police are not releasing a lot of information because this is an ongoing administrative investigation, but we do know that an officer has been charged with a misdemeanor.
On August 28, Officer Cliff Goodwin made a DUI arrest and brought the man before the magistrate. That's when the magistrate says she saw some aggressive behavior on the part of the officer.
"It's safe to say that there was a physical interaction between the officer and the subject," said Police Chief Tim Longo.
The Charlottesville Police Department initiated an immediate administrative investigation.
"It's safe to say, also, that the magistrate witnessed that interaction [and] made a determination based on her observations that it was inappropriate," he continued.
Soon after Virginia State Police began looking into the incident and issued a permitted warrant to the officer for assault and battery on Wednesday.
Police Chief Tim Longo couldn't comment on the specifics of what led to the charge.
"It could be a push, it could be any number [of things]. Any level of physical force could give rise to these kinds of allegations, but again part of the reason for not wanting to speak in great detail about those substantive facts is [that] those are facts that will be in contest when this case goes to a criminal trial," said Longo.
Goodwin is scheduled to appear in court on January 25th. Charlottesville police say as soon as these allegations came to light, the officer was suspended and assigned to only administrative duties. The officer has been a member of the Charlottesville poliec force for 4 years.
