UVA students are bracing for a proposed student housing rate increase.

This week a board of visitors committee recommended a 9.7% increase in University of Virginia student housing rates for the 2006-07 school year.

The hike would raise the university's average housing rate to more than $3,600 for the academic year. Of the proposed 9.7% increase, about 5% would fund major renovation and replacement of first-year residence halls.

The remaining amount would cover rising operating costs, like salaries, utilities, debt service for a heating plant upgrade, property insurance and trash removal.

The chairman of the university's Capital Campaign says the hike is one aspect of the university's fundraising goal of $3 billion by the year 2011.
