Businesses on the Downtown Mall will soon have to pay a bit more for their customers to park for free.

Charlottesville Parking Center is raising their rates for the validation system. A majority of businesses in the downtown area use the system, which allows customers up to 2 free hours of parking. Fees range from $60 to just over $1,000. With the new rate, for example, the $60 fee increases to $75. This is the first time in five years the rates have gone up.

"Because of the increases in both cost and then usage, we could have done it 3 years ago. We try to hold the line as long as possible but when it just becomes impossible to continue to do this, then we try to put through something that everyone can live with. And that's really where we are now," said general manager for the Charlottesville Parking Center, Bob Stroh.

The increase goes into effect March 1.
