With only 17 days under his belt as Virginia Governor, Tim Kaine made his first national address, giving the Democratic response to the State of the Union.

Governor Tim Kaine vowed that his party's response to the State of the Union would not be Bush bashing. Rather, he highlighted what the Commonwealth does well--a possible example for the country.

"There's a better way," said Kaine.

That was Tim Kaine's focus as he responded to the State of the Union. He cited certain failures during the Bush Administration's first five years.

"Ourfederal government should serve the American people. But that mission is frustrated by this Administration's poor choices and bad management," Kaine said.

Giving the address from the Executive mansion in Richmond, the Governor highlighted several key issues trouble the current administration, including overspending.

"You have the right to expect government to be fiscally responsible, pay the bills, and live within its means," he said.

Using Virginia as an example, Kaine pointed to the need for bipartisan cooperation to solve many perceived problems including healthcare and education reform.

It's not about partisanship or political spin. It's about protecting the rights endowed by our Creator; fulfilling the principle of equality set out in our Declaration of Independence," said Kaine.

But most of all, he called for a renewed dedication to serving the American people.

"We ask all Americans to join us in that effort. Because together, America can do better," Kaine concluded.

The 10-minute address was the first national speech from this newly elected governor, a speech in which he hoped will vault Virginia politics back to the national spotlight.
