Students Protest Cuts to UVa Financial Aid Program

Sept. 20, 2013

The Board of Visitors is cutting the Access UVa financial aid program, and students are speaking out.

Students gathered outside the Rotunda in support of the school's financial aid program, which promises to help low-income students pay for classes.

The board recently voted to cut funding to Access UVa and end the no-loan policy towards lower income students.

Many believe the board should add to the financial aid program rather than cut it. Especially since the University of Virginia is one of the wealthiest public schools in the nation.

“It's hard enough as it is getting students who have a lot of financial aid barriers to go to college,” says Heather Berg, a third-year student at UVa. “So when those students have to take out loans and face that much debt, it's not going to make them want to come here.”

Students also delivered a petition during today's board of visitors meeting.
