Two Albemarle High School students are the very first 16-year-olds to donate blood in Virginia; this after Governor Kaine signed a bill in to law which allows 16 year olds to donate.
The two teens, Shannon Lindemann and Maisy Pando, were a little uneasy about donating blood for the first time, but never second-guessed their decisions.
"I asked if I could donate and it just came to be that I was going to be the first one," said Pando.
"My grandmothers was really sick in the hospital, she got a few blood transfusions, and I figured that if it could save a life, why not?" added Lindemann.
So, when the clock struck 12:01am Tuesday morning, Shannon and Maisy became the first 16 year-olds to donate blood in Virginia.
"They were registered at 12:01 and 12:04 and donated blood at 12:20 and 12:21, so history was made tonight. They saved a life," said Brian Chandler of Virginia Blood Services.
For several months, Virginia Blood Services has anticipated the age for blood donars to be lowered from 17 to 16.
"Currently 37% of the population is able to donate and thats down from 60% just a few years ago, so we needed to find another source for blood donations," said Chandler.
These first-time donars say saving lives takes only minutes, and that is why they jumped on board to do it the very second they could.
"Just try it. If you don't like it, you don't have to do it again, but you can save three people with one time, and I did it in seven minutes," said Lindemann.
Hundreds have already signed up to donate across the Commonwealth Tuesday; 16 year-olds must have their parents permission to donate.
Virginia blood services need about 380 blood donations a day to provide services throughout Richmond and central Virginia.
