$2.9 million dollars was awarded to the University of Virginia's Department of Biomedical Engineering. The Coulter Award will help students transform science and technology into products for healthcare. Only a select group of Biomedical Engineering Departments across the country were chosen and UVA was picked due to its unique collaboration between the Engineering and Medical schools.

"We are extremely excited about the fact that we got that money. I think it goes to enhance what we are already doing in the area of biomedical engineering and also it's really helping us in bringing together engineers and the medical profession into generating products," explained Jim Aylor, Dean of the Biomedical Engineering School.

There are already 20 proposals on the table for five projects developing new products. The hope is that in a few years these new products will be available to the healthcare industry.
