Charlottesville Police are investigating a shooting in the 100 block of Waterbury Court that left one man dead.

Around 7:45 p.m., Charlottesville Police responded to a shooting at the Ridgecrest Community.

"When officers got here, they found a 26-year-old black male with one gunshot to the chest," said Lt. Gary Pleasants of the Charlottesville Police Department. "He was immediately transported to UVA [Emergency Room]." He died sometime before midnight.

There were several people at home at the time of the shooting. Those at home are not cooperating fully with police. Because of that, police say they are not sure of exactly how the shooting occurred.

"At this moment, we do not know if it is self-inflicted, accidental, or intentional by someone else. We are investigating that right now," Pleasants said.

Police say the victim does not appear to live at the home where the shooting occurred. They also say they have recovered the 9 millimeter handgun used in the incident. Kara Perkuchin has lived in the community for about a year and a half and has always felt safe.

"It's generally pretty safe, at least the stretch of the neighborhood that I live, it's always very quiet. There are a lot of young married families, young couples with babies and UVA graduate students," she said.

At this point there have been no arrests in this case.
