An early morning fire in Charlottesville destroyed an SUV on Palatine Avenue.
The fire was reported just before 2 a.m. Charlottesville firefighters arrived to find a navy blue Chevrolet Suburban engulfed in flames. Firefighters say the flames shot up above telephone poles on the street. Neighbors also reported hearing about half a dozen explosions, which woke them up.
"I was actually asleep and I heard this big noise and I thought somebody was outside shooting or something to that effect," said Monica Johnson. "So I see an orange glow from my front room in my house and I was like I don't think that is shooting, so I go to the window and it turns out that it was actually this car on fire."
"It sounded like maybe six shotgun shells and then this was on fire and it was about 30 feet tall and very orange," said Nicholas Liivak, who also witnessed the fire.
Police say the driver of the SUV was not hurt in the fire. The cause is still under investigation.
