An 18-year-old is recovering in the UVA Medical Center tonight after shooting himself in the leg. It happened just after 7 p.m. in the 1000 block of Cherry Avenue.

Police got the call to respond after the man was reported to be shot in the leg. The victim was taken by private car to UVA Medical Center. He suffered non life threatening injuries.

After almost an hour of investigating, police believe that the man was handling a weapon on the porch of a home when it accidentally discharged. He was struck in the leg from the bullet.

At this time, police say the investigation remains open. No word if any charges are pending against the man.
