No one is ever prepared to hear that their child has a life-threatening illness. When a Scottsville family received the news, they knew they would have to make sacrifices and try to overcome the odds.

"About four weeks ago he started running a fever on a Wednesday. The fever kept going on until Saturday and that's when [my son] started screaming of abdominal pain," said Amanda Snow.

Snow took her son Sean to the Emergency Room at the University of Virginia Health Center, not knowing that within hours she will hear the news that will turn her life upside down. Three-year-old Sean was diagnosed with AML, a rare type of Leukemia.

"I was told that it was very complicated to treat so of course I was very upset," said Snow.

Sean has had round the clock treatments, everything from blood platelet transfusions to chemotherapy. Doctors said it seems to be helping for now but the worst is not over.

Amanda said since the diagnosis, it's been hard on her and her husband. Even though she has another child at home and one on the way, she had to quit her job to take care of Sean.

"We're still in a waiting period to see if chemo is doing everything it's supposed to," said Amanda Snow.

While Amanda can only sit and wait, others are wasting no time. Co-workers have been passing out fliers and setting up funds to help the family financially.

"I want to help out anyway I can, I don't like seeing kids in this condition," said Rex Legg, a Texaco Manager.

Legg said he feels Amanda's pain; his family has been affected by Leukemia as well. "I had a three-year-old nephew that died with this; it's been several years ago," said Legg.

Rex is hoping his contribution will encourage others to help the Snow family. I

f you would like to help, there will be a car wash and bake sale at the Greenbrier Texaco on Saturday March 25 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. All donations will go toward Sean's medical expenses.
