Louisa County is investigating a widespread teen sexting scandal.
It can lead to bullying, blackmail, and be a black mark for potential employers. But teens in our area are still sexting.
When Louisa County Sheriff’s officers started looking at the photo scandal, it appeared to be pretty isolated. Nude photographs of a 14 year old and two 15 years olds were found on Instagram.
But Major Donald Lowe of the Louisa County Sheriff’s Department says they quickly found out that was just the beginning.
"During the course of the investigation while were interviewing one or two people, we all the sudden have names of you know, four or five more and that thing propagated to over a hundred people and over a thousand images."
Within days, the number of people involved included middle and high school age teenagers from Albemarle, Louisa, Fluvanna, Orange, Goochland, and Hanover counties.
Of the thousands of images, the majority are sexually explicit.
The photos were being shared through two different Instagram accounts, both of which have been shut down. At this point in the investigation, it looks like the teens, both boys and girls, were willingly included.
At this point no charges have been filed. The Louisa County Sheriff's office is searching through the phones they've collected, interviewing people, and trying to find out who was behind the Instagram accounts.
