The University of Virginia is ending its relationship with the Semester at Sea program.

The Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) and UVa. have mutually agreed that the university’s sponsorship of program will end by May 31, 2016.

All scheduled voyages between now and spring of 2016 will continue as planned.

Any questions regarding upcoming voyages should be directed to the Institute for Shipboard Education by calling 800-854-0195 or emailing info@semesteratsea.org.

ISE released the following statement:

"E¬ffective May 31, 2016, the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) and the University of Virginia will discontinue their academic partnership. The Spring 2016 Semester at Sea (SAS) voyage will be the final SAS voyage with UVa. as the program’s academic sponsor.

"Over the past fifty years, ISE has partnered with four universities for academic sponsorship, educating students through multiple-country study and hands-on field experiences around the world. ISE is actively pursuing a new academic partner for the program.

"UVa. became academic sponsor of Semester at Sea in 2006, providing SAS students with UVa. course credit. More than 150 UVa. faculty members have participated in SAS voyages. Over the course of 23 U.Va.-sponsored SAS voyages, approximately 14,000 students from 250 – 300 colleges and universities per voyage have sailed.

Semester at Sea has brought students to more than 50 diff¬erent countries throughout UVa.’s 8 years of academic sponsorship.

The UVa. and ISE relationship has been mutually beneficial and both parties look forward to UVa. faculty and students sailing on future voyages."
