Some students at Western Albemarle high school stayed out of school Thursday. They are not playing hooky but are afraid something bad might happen at their school today.

Rumors have been going around school that this was the day that four teens would have carried out their plot to attack two high schools had police not thwarted their plans. Those rumors have kids staying out of class.

“There was a rumor going around yesterday and it kind of upset everyone and I know a lot of people are worried and not going today,” said Western Albemarle senior Erin Maupin.

Maupin said she has at least twenty friends who skipped school because they were scared something might happen, on this day--the anniversary of columbine--and the day four teens were going to blow up the school, had they not been caught by police.

School officials tried to dispel fears that some of the kids involved in the plot had not been arrested and told students the schools are safe. Some parents agreed.

The information we got was that there wasn’t really substantial worry and we didn’t want to just be ruled by fear that something might happen so we talked to our daughters about that and took them to school today,” said Western Parent Ann Bromley.

Bus drivers told us their buses weren't quite so full and there were few cars entering the usually busy intersection in front of Western this morning.

“Normally its backed up bumper to bumper but today not much,” said Neal Carter.

Carter's also worried, his wife works in the cafeteria.

“I'm a little concerned but I think its going to be kept under control the way it sounds. She is not allowed in till 7:30 and normally she is there at 7 and it sounds to me its going to be pretty well policed,” said Carter.

Carter said his wife was given directions yesterday that she and everyone else could enter only through the main door this morning. Just part of the precautions school officials and police are taking today.

The four teens arrested in that plot to attack the schools have been prosecuted.
