A former Albemarle County Clerk's Office employee pleads guilty to embezzling nearly $14,000.
On Friday, Dayna Awkard pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement of $13,884.
Awkard was an employee for the Clerk's Office for 24 years, but resigned on March 21st of this year after rumors surfaced that she had taken cash from the office.
The Commonwealth's Attorney of Henrico County, David Stock, was brought in for the case since Awkard worked with attorneys in Albemarle Co.
According to Stock, the money taken was from cases where the fees were paid up-front, such as divorces or name changes. All the paperwork was properly filed with the court, but many files did not have the proper receipts.
Officials received an anonymous tip in March, and discovered 180 files that had no receipts, or false receipts from other cases. Awkard was interviewed by Va. State Police on March 18th, at which point she admitted to taking money from the Clerk's Office.
Awkard reportedly told investigators that her husband had been out of work for years, and that the money was to pay bills.
She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
Awkard is scheduled to be sentenced on October 24th.
