Charlottesville Police have charged a 16-year-old with being a member of the national gang, "The Bloods," and say that the reason he is behind bars is due to the violence that erupted when he tried to recruit another member.

A 15 year-old told Charlottesville police he was walking on Friday night around 11:30 p.m. near Garrett Square when he was jumped by more than a dozen members of the gang "The Bloods." He was beaten so severely he needs a metal plate put in his head.

The victim went to an Albemarle County School for troubled teens. He was approached by a friend from school, and when he refused to join "The Bloods," he was gang beaten.

“The last report we got he was getting ready to undergo some fairly extensive medical treatment. It was going to involve an operation and insert a metal plate in his face,” said Charlottesville police Captain Chip Harding.

Police said he was walking with a classmate near Garrett Square, Police have arrested one of the males involved, who is now charged with malicious wounding, and two gang-related offenses.

Authorities are unsure, however, if "The Bloods" are actively recruiting in Charlottesville.

“We do know from other intelligence that we see kids with red bandannas and stuff. Some report to be members of "The Bloods" gang. Whether they are wanna-be's or pretend-to-be's, we don't know at this point,” said Harding.

Police say that word is "The Bloods" are heavily recruiting across the country and in Virginia but they have not confirmed the activity here.

A second victim with a similar story came forward to police late this afternoon. The 17-year-old said he was also beaten in the Garrett Square area on Friday night and got his front tooth knocked out. Police ask anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 434-977-4000.
