The University of Virginia has a solid women's tennis program, but next year they should be even better after getting one of the best recruits in the country.

By the end of 2005, Kristen McVitty was the number one junior tennis player in the nation and this fall she'll be playing at UVA.

"First of all, I loved UVA when I first saw it and then on top of that the coaches are amazing and the girls on the team are so nice and it was just a really good fit," said McVitty.

A good fit for everyone involved, especially the team.

"In terms of the type of kid and the overall package she is to me the best recruit that may be going to college," said Mark Guilbeau UVA Women's Tennis Coach.

She began playing seriously when she was seven. She now practices four hours a day and plays tournaments all over the world. But it's not just her skills that excite her new coach.

"She's a smart kid. She's genuine. You talk to her about school and she's going to light up just as much as when you talk to her about tennis and you don't find that. You don't find that very often at all," said Guilbeau.

McVitty just played in the Boyd Tinsley Tournament, which is her first pro tournament. Although she didn't win, she kept an upbeat attitude.

"Oh it was so much fun, it was great. It was a good experience," said McVitty.

As another perk, she met sponsor Boyd Tinsley who plays in the Dave Matthew's Band.

"I saw him and that was really cool. I introduced myself and he was really nice so that was really neat," said McVitty.

Originally from Los Angeles, she will soon move cross-country with hopes of playing both doubles and singles at UVA.

McVitty is currently in Italy playing a tournament with hopes of getting into the Wimbledon Junior Championships.
