The Greene County Board of Supervisors passed its 2007 fiscal year budget, but not all matters seemed to be resolved. During the budget process, the Greene County library asked for an additional $30,000 in funding over last year. Last night, the county only granted them $19,000, leaving them to wonder what's next.
After much discussion in the past several months, the Greene County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a $65 million budget, however, this budget doesn't fully fund the Stanardsville library.
"We feel the library is such an important part, an integral part of the community and a cornerstone of the community," said Deborah Willenborg of Friends of the Greene County Library.
"Nobody really got what they asked for but we are trying to maintain enough money in our reserve to make sure we can still operate effectively," said Chairman Steve Catalano.
Library officials had asked the County for an extra $30,000 to cover expenses, including extra costs of membership in the Jefferson Madison Regional Library system. Supervisors were not convinced the library did enough cutting, giving them only $19,000.
"We're asking them to look deeper into their operation to try and give value to the citizens to the County who use the library," Catalano said.
"There becomes a point when the system can only become so lean. Then you have a system that is really just not working," said Willenborg.
Both the Supervisors and library officials agreed on one thing, the need for it to open its doors.
"Obviously our goal is to keep the library open as much as we possibly can, and so that is what we are going to work toward," Willenborg said.
Library officials say they will discuss the funding in the next week and try and come up with a solution. They did say however, that it is possible the library will not be able to open for the 32 hours a week that it currently does.
