June 1st begins begins hurricane season and there are a few precautions you can do to keep your family safe.

The best thing you can do is plan in advance by packing three to five days worth of supplies and review them every three to six months, especially batteries. Businesses should also keep these kits and have exit routes planned and emergency contacts for all employees.

"Most of us keep our numbers, our phone numbers, on our cell phone. If you lose cell service , you don't have those numbers available to you, so it's always a good idea to post those numbers somewhere around your home or at your work place," said Albemarle County Executive Bob Tucker.

In residential areas, neighbors are usually the first responders. The best thing you can do is get to know the people who live nearby and figure out new ways to get in and out of your development.
