Panel Discusses Religion and Politics

September 23, 2008

A panel of experts met Monday night to discuss how religion has influenced politics. They also talked about where candidates draw the line when it comes to mixing the two.

Part of the conversation centered on how religious voters align with parties and candidates.

Experts said it is important to have discussions like this because of the large role religion plays in politics.

"Religion is everywhere, and not just as in the previous campaign, mostly on the Republican side," said Luis Lugo, Director of the Pew Forum on Religion. "It is, indeed as it was in 2000, both on the Republican and the Democratic side."

The forum was sponsored by the University of Virginia Center for Politics. It was part of the center's 2008 National Symposium Series on Race, Religion, and Gender.
