A woman in Crozet is heading up a project to keep kids out of trouble after school. She's hoping a fundraiser this weekend will bring in enough money to renovate a new recreation center for teens.

Brenda Miller has big plans for an old, empty house in Crozet. She says its large spacious rooms make it ideal for a teen recreation center.

"There needs to be a place where they can go after school, where they can just be with there friends; I know that there's a lot of them that play sports but there’s a lot that don't play sports and even the ones that do play sports [are] looking for a place to hang out," said Brenda Miller.

The house sits next to and is owned by Hillsborough Baptist Church, which has no use for it. Miller's goal is to restore each room and add board games, video games, computers and even tutors. She wants to make it a place where middle and high school students can come and stay out of trouble.

"We're not just trying to pull in the kids from our church, we're actually trying to reach out to the kids in the neighborhood, from any church or no church at all," said Miller.

Many kids in Crozet are left with few places to go after school. That's why Mason Miller, a ninth grader is all for his mom's idea.

"The kids need somewhere else to go, somewhere to hang out with friends and not to get into trouble," said Mason Miller.

But before the Miller's can open up in the fall, they still need to renovate. They've been prepping for a fundraiser at the house this Saturday and they hope to raise at least $5,000.

"I hope we outgrow out, I hope it gets huge, but it's a good place to start," said Miller.

The fundraiser will be held Saturday, June 10 next to the Hillsborough Baptist Church in Crozet. The cost is $10 and there will be a lot of food and games.
