A Madison County man charged with shooting a woman in the face bought a little extra time from Virginia's legal system on Wednesday.
James Winstead was supposed to be in court as part of a preliminary hearing, but surprised the court by asking for another lawyer.
He is charged with malicious wounding and possession of a firearm for a shooting in February.
"Basically that puts the case off for approximately 30 more days. It gives the new attorney time to prepare if he has some type of motions to present to the court," said Sheriff Erik Weaver of Madison County.
Winstead made the request so he could find his own lawyer and not use the court-appointed lawyer.
