Organizers of the Charlottesville Pride Festival estimate some 3,500 people attended the second-annual event in Lee Park on Saturday.

Charlottesville city councilor Dave Norris was the recipient of the Political Action Award, given for his support to the LGBT community. Roberta Williamson received the Cornerstone Award, recognizing actions that have had an impact on the LGBT community.

Supporters of Charlottesville's gay and lesbian community celebrated pride at the second-annual Pride Festival on Saturday afternoon.

Hundreds attended the event at Lee Park. The LGBT equality group C'ville Pride held the first festival in 2012. For this year's event, the festival featured around 60 vendors, a drag show and music.

The festival means something more this year as the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act this summer.

Organizers say the event is designed to help integrate the gay and lesbian community within the larger Charlottesville community.

"It just creates an atmosphere that is accepting and welcoming," said Amy Marshall, one of the festival's organizers. "That's good for the LGBT community. It's good for Charlottesville."

Organizers say they have already started planning for next year's event, saying the second Saturday of September will likely be the date.
