Albemarle County Police are trying to figure out who is responsible for setting fire to a couple campaign signs.
The incident happened early Saturday morning in Earlysville. A McCain-Palin sign and a Virgil Goode sign were set on fire.
"This is a disturbing turn of events and I'm dismayed at the intolerance and attempted intimidation," said Chairman of the Albemarle County Republican Committee, Christian Schoenewald.
Both signs were 4' X 8' that had been posted on someone's private property.
"I'm concerned that this new behavior shows an escalation in the desire to intimidate Republican voters. Theft and defacing of signs is one thing. Burning signs elevates the situation to a whole new level," said Schoenewald.
Last month, similar Republican campaign signs were stolen from that same area.

time for the GOP to come up with some fire-proof signs. I know some are already resistant in that they are from recycled plastic, but apparently that's not good enough. there was already at least one guy here in "the OC" that had to build a tamper-proof enclosure for his "Yes on 8 - Protect Traditional Families" sign since it had been tampered with 2 or 3 times. I guess that finally slowed the offenders, though said enclosure was made of WOOD so I suppose it wasn't really fire proof.
Very true, Steve. When I lived in the Fontaine Ave. area, Bush '04 stickers magically disappeared from my truck weekley until CPD caught the vandals. No surprise they were militant liberals
Liberals are VERY pro-free speech, as long as that speech agrees with their views. Personally I would never put a Republican bumper sticker on my car or sign on my lawn. It's not worth the risk. Very sad, but true.
