The state received a multi-million dollar federal grant to help the local health systems plan for a pandemic. The Thomas Jefferson Health District received several thousand dollars that will be used to pay for more employees that will prepare for a bird flu pandemic.
Health Department officials said the new staff will have to coordinate with the University of Virginia and other medical centers.
"They will try to find answers to questions like, what are we going to do with people that become sick? Also, other things that are included are [questions like] how are we going to isolate and or quarantine people if that particular strategy is an option for us?" explained Roy Crewz, of the Thomas Jefferson Health District.
Health department officials said no matter how much planning and preparation they do they will be overwhelmed with the pandemic at some point in time, that is why the health department wants individual people to prepare, as well.
