The crime of stealing boating equipment was almost forgotten in one section of Orange county, but recently it seems to have made a comeback. Some say it is causing a concern in the Lake of the Woods subdivision.

Lake of the Woods is a gated community which started out as a retirement community many years ago. Boasting lots of private land next to the water, and thousands of residents, boating is sure to be a big thing for those who live there.

"It's probably a 300-acre-plus water impoundment, so boating very popular down there [with] a lot of boats," said Sheriff C.G. Feldman, or Orange County.

This is giving thieves the perfect opportunity to steal anything boat-related. In fact, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, that's exactly what two 19-year-olds did.

"These motors they stole were really nice new Mercury outdoor motors, Honda outdoor motors, Trolley motors [and] batteries," added Sheriff Feldman.

These are items that are worth hundreds of dollars. Police say the thieves are Garret Torney and Jonathan Worman who also live in Lake of the Woods.

The two could have gotten off with a whole lot of money, but police say it wasn't happening. For whatever reason, the thieves got scared.

"...and thought [maybe] they could get rid of the evidence by throwing it off a bridge which actually worked to our advantage," explained Sheriff Feldman.

Police say the two didn't unload the boating equipment alone, and instead got help from 19-year-old Madeline Hayes.

"We've gotten information that she was seen throwing the stolen property off the Route 3 Bridge in Germanna into the Rapidan River," said Sheriff Feldman.

Police were able to recover the boating equipment from the river, and return it to its owners.

All three suspects were taken to jail. The charges for the two thieves, and their accomplice are felonies.
