It's been four years in the making and now Ruckersville's new waste-water treatment plant is set to open. The $13 million sewage plant means a lot for growth in that area.
"In order to have any type of commercial development in Greene county, you have to have adequate public water and sewer in place to do that and this is an important step in reaching that goal," said Barry Clark, Greene County Administrator.
The project first came about four years ago when county leaders realized the waste-water plant in Stanardsville wasn't big enough to service the area. This new state-of-the-art facility, however, will provide water and sewer services to the area's newest businesses and some homes along Route 29, near Route 33. County leaders expect the plant will open the gates for more growth.
"It will allow for the commercial and residential growth--which clearly is happening in Ruckersville--to continue to happen, and be the economic engine for the county," said Herbert White, Engineer for WW Associates.
However, some people in Greene County aren't so sure the area can handle it.
"They're growing too fast, no infrastructure, no room left for business, these are my concerns," explained Shirley Clay, a Greene County resident.
Still, county leaders say they've weighed all the options and think more businesses would be an asset to the area's residents. They've also taken extra measures to make sure the plant is environmentally-friendly and out of view from local neighborhoods.
"Greene is taking a proactive approach to the problems and concerns with infrastructure they've had in the past and I feel that will be beneficial to everyone in the future," said Clark.
The plant is set to open around July 11.
