People around the nation, and right here in Charlottesville, are protesting California's gay marriage ban, Proposition 8.

They stood out in the rain Saturday to protest the ban right here in Charlottesville. Organizers say it was more of a rally than a protest. People cheered, waved signs, and sang at the gathering. Their main goal was to protest laws like Proposition 8, which they say are not fair. The protesters emphasized that people should not be judged based on sexual orientation.

"All of us here feel that it's a civil right and that it should be granted to all citizens in the United States. Prohibiting it on the basis of same sex relationship is illegal, un-constitutional and generally just unfair," said André Hakes, a protester.

Carrying signs, protesters marched down the Downtown Mall, and ended in front of the Federal Court House.
