This specific tree didn't come from a Christmas tree farm, it came right out of someones backyard. In fact, each year Charlottesville's Christmas tree is donated by someone local.
Wayne and Elva Ferguson donated this tree and they hope it will make everyone happy this holiday season.

Until about two weeks ago, this evergreen was sitting in the Ferguson's backyard.

"We planned to have this tree taken out last year because its starting to out grow the space its in...growing into the drive way and so forth. so we wanted to instead of just throwing it away or using it as firewood we would like to donate it as a Christmas tree," said Wayne Ferguson, who donated this year's Christmas tree.

Charlottesville's main Christmas tree that is...located right in the center of the downtown mall.

"We're just happy to contribute something to the community that we've lived in off and on for the last 42 years," said Mr. Ferguson.

The Ferguson's hope their tree will represent the season and bring joy to everyone as they pass.

"This is a difficult time in our country to smile. But, I still believe that you'll walk down the mall and you'll look at that tree and no matter what is going on elsewhere there will be a smile. That's what it really means to me," said Elva Ferguson, who also donated the tree.

The Norwegian Spruce went from a big tree in the Ferguson's backyard, to a symbol of the holidays, in the center of town where everyone can enjoy it.

"Nothing brings a smile to anybody's face than seeing children and their excitement and joy. I think that's what will make us very happy. To know that we were able to have just a very small part in this holiday season," said Mrs. Ferguson.

The Ferguson's said their grandchildren weren't able to make it to see the tree lighting ceremony this evening. But, they still loved seeing all the young kids enjoying their tree and the holiday season.

There are 20,000 lights on this year's Christmas tree and all the ornaments were donated by the downtown businesses.
