The manhunt is over for a suspect police said was part of a fatal accident in Colonial Heights that left an off-duty police officer dead.
Police have been on the hunt all week long for a career-criminal and Thursday evening, they got him.
"It's your picture perfect [neighborhood]-- just, ice cream truck going through and just very quiet," said Susan Michie.
Late Thursday afternoon that quiet neighborhood was the scene of a big police operation. More than 20 officers helped arrest Douglas Michael Brown outside of a home along Whitney Court in the Briarwood subdivision in northern Albemarle County.
Police said the house Brown was in had been under surveillance for at least the past day. At 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, they made the arrest.
"As soon as the officers saw him they decided to take him down," said Lt. John Teixeira, of the Albemarle County Police.
Brown was wanted in connection with a high-speed chase last weekend in Chesterfield County that left an off-duty Colonial Beach police officer dead.
Thursday, neighbors were shocked by what went on in their neighborhood, but Michie lives right across the street, and she let undercover officers use her home to watch Brown all day Thursday. Her dog even played a role in the stake-out.
"They were nice enough to take her for a walk for me, and [were] able to circle around the home with her," explained Michie. "It made it a little easier, so they didn't look so noticeable."
Albemarle County police said it was a joint effort from several departments, and a call from Crimestoppers, that led them to Brown.
"We've been dealing with Mr. Brown for quite some time. Quite some time," said Lt. Teixeira. "I just hope now that we finally got our hands on [him]--that he's in, and stays in [jail ]until these charges are resolved."
Brown is being held on several charges, including a probation violation. Police say those are only the beginning of what will likely be numerous charges from numerous counties.
The relationship between Mr. Brown and the woman living in the home he was staying in on Whitney Court is unclear, but police say she may also face charges.
