A former Albemarle County Sheriff's life as an undercover FBI agent is in the spotlight.
The Discovery Channel airs a in-depth inside look at his undercover life. We sat down with Ed Robb for a preview.
Over the last 71 years, Robb was the Sheriff of Albemarle County and a state senator. He's a dad and a grandfather. Then there was the time he was an undercover FBI agent.
"U.S. News would call it the largest drug bust in the history of the U.S." Robb remembers. That was April, 1988.
"I was recruited by the FBI to be the lead agent in penetration and infiltration of an old country Sicilian mafia organization that was distributing heroin here in the United States," he says.
Much of the distribution was through pizza parlors, hence the name of the operation, The Pizza Connection 2, also called Infamita.
"I got to know them and they accepted me and it wasn't long before they took me into their confidence and felt as though I would be the king pin because they thought I had a lot of money," Robb says.
Under FBI surveillance, he made several drug deals.
When undercover, he always feared the Mafia would realize who he really was.
He says, "to be scared and to be paranoid is the emotion that keeps you safe, you're constantly alert and aware."
The operation would end with over 250 arrests, earning Robb the U.S. Attorney General Award.
It would be last time he'd go undercover. It's a life he misses, and one you can get a glimpse into on the Discovery Network.
The one-hour special will air Tuesday night at 9 and at additional times through the week.
