The town of Scottsville is one step closer to giving their downtown area a bit of a facelift. Now they're hoping that Albemarle County will help them financially as they move forward in the process.
Beautifying downtown Scottsville has been in the works for the past six years.
"It's important mainly for our economic development," said the town's mayor, Stephen Phipps.
Called the Streetscape Project, the plan focuses on revamping the major corridor, Valley Street.
"The Streetscape Project entails the removal of power poles, all the wires, all of the lights that are on the power poles, putting them under ground," said Jack Hodge with Volkert & Associates.
The plan also calls for light fixtures to line the streets and a new storm drain system. Not to mention the removal of all the existing trees and the planting of smaller ones.
"The trees will come out and be replaced by a lesser number into a steel grate plate," added Hodge.
Delays and other setbacks have put the town about $500,000 short to complete the plan. Wednesday, town officials turned to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors.
"We're here to ask the county for help, we have enough funds at this time to complete about half the project," said Mayor Phipps.
The other half would include Main Street. Town officials say it's more than just making Scottsville look better; it's also about making sure the town will thrive.
"I've been to a lot of towns and cities around Virginia that have done these projects, and they all say it's benefited their projects, their businesses have been enhanced, and we look forward to doing the same thing here," said Mayor Phipps.
Town officials say the Valley Street part of the project will be done and that they've already taken bids to start the construction. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see whether the county will be willing to give them the rest of the money to work on the other section the downtown area.
The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has asked for a report on the project and could make a decision within the next month.
