A former State Delegate and Attorney General, Baliles was Governor from 1986-1990. He is now Director of the Miller Center for Public Affairs, a public-policy think tank at the University of Virginia.

Baliles released the following statement:

"I am honored to have been chosen by the Virginia Press Association for the distinguished Virginian of the Year award. The list of accomplished Virginians recognized by the VPA includes leaders who have worked with the Miller Center to further its public service mission, and others whose far-ranging achievements have contributed to our lives. It is a privilege to join their ranks.”
