Residents Fight for Road Changes

Some Woolen Mills residents are asking City Council to change the way vehicles, especially trucks, travel on Franklin Street.

"Particularly in the last three years, there has been a huge increase in all the traffic especially the large truck traffic and at all hours of the night," said resident Chuck Taylor.

It's trucks like these that have many Woolen Mills neighbors upset. Residents say large trucks along with many cars use Franklin Street to cut through from Carlton Avenue to East Market Street causing a big disturbance.

"When I was teaching I actually had to stop talking to my students when trucks came through. They also wake me up in the morning because I like to sleep with my windows open," said resident Mary Joe Dominic."It's a reasonable request. We are asking for half of the traffic that comes through our neighborhood to be reduced," said resident Laura Covert.

Residents want City Council to consider making Franklin Street a one-way cutting the nearly 1,700 cars a day that use the road in half. But business owners on the south side of the route say it would hurt business. Instead, they say they are willing to work with residents toward a viable solution for both.

"I am willing to talk and open to neighbors discussions about traffic," said H.T. Ferron President Tommy Adkins.

"Everyone involved would be working towards the same goal and that could be some voluntary reduction. Everyone would not be pleased but it would be a workable solution," said business owner Preston Coiner.

The answer could come in three different forms. City Council could decide to make the road one-way, only allowing southbound traffic from East Market Street. Council could also decide to restrict truck traffic on the road, or last, they could let the business owners and the residents work out a solution. A decision will be made at the next meeting in October.
